CLIL 2010 A trip to mount Teide

In november, the CLIL class made a trip to Teide National Park. It is situated on the island of Tenerife and has the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano that, at 3,718 m, is the highest peak on Spanish soil. It is regarded as the world’s third-tallest volcanic structure.

Some plant species in the Teide National Park are the Teide white broom (Spartocytisus supranubius), which has a white and pink flower; the Canary Island wallflower (Erysimum scoparium), which has white and violet flowers; and the Teide red bugloss (Echium wildpretii), whose red flowers form a pyramidup to 3m in height. The Teide Violet (Viola cheiranthifolia) can be found right up to the summit of the volcano, making it the highest flowering plant in Spain.

We learnt that only ten species of bird nest in the park and these include: the blue chaffinch (Fringilla teydea teydea), Berthelot’s pipit (Anthus berthelotii berthelotii); the wild canary (Serinus canaria); and the great grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor koenige).

Three endemic reptile species are also found – the Canary Island Lizard (Gallotia galloti galloti), the Canary Island wall gecko (Tarentola delalandii), and the Canary Island skink (Chalcides viridanus viridanus). The only mammals native to the park are bats, the most common species of which is Leisler’s bat (Nycatalus leisleri). Other mammals such as the mouflon, the rabbit, the house mouse, the black rat, the feral cat, and the Algerian hedgehog have all been introduced to the park.

Some impressions

Here we learned that the Teide measures 3718 m. It is the biggest volcano that exists in the whole Spain. It has been innactive for the last 200 years . All those rocks that we have behind are lava-rocks. They have remained like that for a long time. Iván

I liked the excursion because it is a landscape not usually seen. What I liked most was the lanscape. I don´t see that sort in the city. Sonia

The trip was beautiful and we walked a lot. I like that. I liked the big stones on this photo. I vomited coming back on the bus because I ate too much. Sorry Ivan

Here we have a precious landscape. Suddenly, plants stop growing and it is only dry lava. There is a desert with few plants since there is not enough water for the plants to grow. Alejandro

We saw a tourist group visiting the famous place “El teide”. It is a volcanic space with many naked rocks. It is like a western film. Irene

On this picture we were walking down a path, just to see La Catedral. In La Catedral it is permitted to climp up and has a lot of different plants. Begoña

Ucanca is a famous place in the Park. Ucanca is a sedimentary plain situated among higher lands which is sometimes flooded with water coming down the higher walls. Sometimes small lakes are formed. Elena Darias

The excursion was very interesting as we learnt a lot of the geological history of Tenerife. Eunice

Here it is the famous “Catedral del Teide” When we came closer and I saw it I realized how big it was. There we saw a type of moss. The cathedral is very impressive

The picture show us a desert landscape. We can see here a rocky formation with an irregular shape. It is familiar for us because its “The Teide´s Cathedral”. Juan
